Ex-Red Devils striker Alan Brazil says Costa would be a good option should Lukaku leave Old Trafford
Manchester United could do worse than sign former Chelsea striker Diego Costa this summer should Romelu Lukaku leave.
That is the opinion of talkSPORT host and former Red Devils striker Alan Brazil, who discussed Costa’s potential return to the Premier League on Thursday’s Sports Breakfast.
Costa has been linked with a couple of top flight sides as his future at Atletico Madrid hangs in the balance, with Everton and Wolves both said to be keen on bringing the fiery Spaniard back to England.
However, Big Al says United should make a move for the 30-year-old, who left Chelsea a year-and-a-half ago after falling out with then Blues manager Antonio Conte.
“I think he’d be a fit for Man United if they get rid of Lukaku,” he said.
“By all accounts this morning, representatives of Inter Milan are talking to Manchester United.
“It wouldn’t surprise me if Lukaku was to go, and suddenly there’s a chance of Costa going to Old Trafford.”
Lukaku allegedly wants to leave Man United this summer, and the latest reports claim Inter are pushing ahead with talks to sign the centre-forward.
The Red Devils want at least £75million to sell the Belgium international, and they’d be able to sign Costa with plenty of change to spare using only the money from Lukaku’s sale.
This is according to Kevin Hatchard, the European football expert, who joined talkSPORT’s Sports Bar to discuss Costa’s potential return to England and revealed a €35million asking price has been mooted.
“He may well [return to the Premier League],” said Hatchard. “His return to Atletico Madrid did not work out the way he wanted; there have been disciplinary issues and there have been fitness issues.
“I don’t think he’s impressed Diego Simeone in the way he would have hoped. Alvaro Morata made a much bigger impact when he went there – and Simeone, when he spoke about Morata, was very, very positive.
“We’ve seen Diego Costa be successful in the Premier League – he is a proven goalscorer at that level.
“Atletico have also just spent a huge amount of money bringing in Joao Felix, so Costa’s not going to be playing.
“So [a move] wouldn’t surprise me.
“Atletico would want a transfer fee; there has been talk of around €30/35million.
“It depends on the offers he gets. I think, given the way it ended at Chelsea, people would look at him and think, ‘how much of a risk is this?’
“So it very much depends on the offers that he gets. He may decide to stick it out at Atletico and give it a really good push to see if he’s the man to lead the attack with Joao Felix behind him.
“It’s the risk/reward thing with Costa.”
