Liverpool players slammed by club legend Phil Thompson after Champions League defeat to Red Star Belgrade – ‘Their attitude was wrong’

Liverpool legend Phil Thompson was ‘very disappointed’ with the Reds’ attitude as they suffered a shock defeat to Red Star Belgrade in the Champions League on Tuesday night.

Jurgen Klopp’s side were woeful in the first half as they conceded twice and though they improved after the break, the Serbian hosts defended brilliantly as they closed out the 2-0 win.

The result is a blow to Liverpool’s hopes of progressing out of the Champions League group stages, with two games against Napoli and Paris Saint-Germain to come.

And Thompson believes Klopp would have torn into his side at the half-time break over their sluggish display.

“I’m very disappointed,” the three-time European Cup winner told talkSPORT host Jim White after the game.

“I’m disappointed in the performance and the attitude, certainly in the first half.

“It’s great tying to step it up in the second half, but with the crowd behind red star, it made it extremely difficult.

“The first-half just never got going and it’s something we have to learn from.

“I would image Jurgen Klopp probably tore them off a strip at half-time, and we were better in the second-half, but we were two goals too late by then.”
