Mauricio Pochettino trading Tottenham for Chelsea would be worse than Sol Campbell's move to Arsenal, says Tony Cascarino

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino moving to Chelsea would be more scandalous than when Sol Campbell joined rivals Arsenal, believes former Blues star Tony Cascarino.

Stunning reports on Tuesday have claimed Spurs boss Pochettino is Chelsea’s number one target to take over from Antonio Conte this summer, with the Italian set to leave following Saturday’s FA Cup final.

Pochettino cast doubt over his future earlier this season by saying the club need to win a trophy ‘with me or another’, following an FA Cup semi-final defeat to Manchester United which ended their hopes of ending the campaign with silverware.

The boss also recently added to the speculation by admitting club bosses may not agree with his plans for the future, and hinting that he wants a bigger transfer budget to strengthen the side’s push for silverware.

It is claimed Chelsea will look to take advantage of the situation and are hoping to tempt the Argentine to Stamford Bridge, where he will undoubtedly have more funds at his disposal to build a title-winning team.

And, if the surprise move happens, ex-Chelsea striker Cascarino believes it will be seen as a bigger betrayal than Campbell’s infamous move from White Hart Lane for Highbury in 2001, which saw the defender branded ‘Judas’ by Tottenham supporters.

Speaking on the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast, Cascarino said: “Could this be worse than Sol Campbell going from Spurs for Arsenal?

“I feel a lot of Tottenham fans would think it was. Their manager! All he has done over the last few years at Spurs, he’s created a fantastic team.

“If he went across London to a club like Chelsea, supporters would be absolutely devastated.

“Considering what he’s done at the club, I think they would be so upset.

“The throwaway comment that Poch made a few weeks ago, ‘with me or without me’, that says a lot. Why would you stay that?

“One thing is clear, Chelsea will see this as an opportunity for a big coup of taking a manger they really believe would take the club in a new direction.

“Poch has got a fantastic record, he has nowhere near to funds that have been available at Chelsea, so I could see that making a lot of sense.

“It would be a massive coup for Chelsea.”
