Michael O’Neill has reportedly agreed to become Stoke City’s next manager.

The current Northern Ireland boss will take over at the Championship club following the sacking of Nathan Jones earlier this month, according to the Daily Mail.

They also report that a compensation deal is close to being agreed between the Irish Football Association and Stoke, which is believed to around £650,000.

The Potters have won just twice in the league this season and currently sit bottom of the Championship, costing Jones, who left Luton for the bet365 Stadium in January, his job.

On Thursday, the IFA confirmed O’Neill had been contacted about the vacancy: “The Irish Football Association has been approached by EFL Championship club Stoke City who are seeking permission to speak to Michael O’Neill about their vacant manager’s position,” a statement read.

O’Neill has been in charge of his national side since the end of 2011 and guided them to their first major tournament in 30 years when qualifying for Euro 2016.

O’Neill, who helped lift Northern Ireland from 129th to 20th in the FIFA rankings, see his side currently third in Group C behind the Netherlands and Germany in their quest to reach Euro 2020.

The same publication claim that Stoke are prepared to double his salary to £1.5million a year, but he is expected to remain in charge of Northern Ireland for the Euro 2020 qualifiers against Holland and Germany before taking up his role.

He is also set to be joined at the Potters by Northern Ireland head scout Andy Cousins.
