Peru captain Paolo Guerrero to miss World Cup through increased drugs ban

Guerrero will miss the World Cup

Peru captain Paolo Guerrero will miss the 2018 World Cup after having his drugs ban upped to 14 months.

The 34-year-old was originally banned for a year after testing positive for cocaine in October, though it has been accepted that the Flamengo forward ingested the substance through contaminated tea.

As a result, the suspension was halved to six months by FIFA’s appeal committee, however the Court of Arbitration for Sport increased his sentence to a 14-month ban.

A statement from the Court of Arbitration for Sport declared: “The CAS panel confirmed the existence of an anti-doping rule violation committed by Mr Guerrero but also accepted that he did not attempt to enhance his performance by ingesting the prohibited substance.

“However, the panel considered that the player did bear some fault or negligence, even if it was not significant, and that he could have taken some measures to prevent him from committing the ADRV.”
