There is no doubt that Michael Schumacher is one of the greatest Formula 1 drivers of all time.

Despite FIA president Jean Todt stating that the F1 driver needs to be left in peace, Schumacher has made such a huge impact in the sport that fans are still desperate to find out the state of the injured driver’s health. 

We reflect on why Schumacher remains a legend in motorsport.

The rise of a champion

His entry to the sport was almost by chance when Jordan team driver, Bertrand Gachot was sentenced to jail for spraying a cab driver with gas.

It was in the middle of the 1991 season, and the team needed a driver immediately. Schumacher, who was only 21-years-old at the time and racing in Formula 3, managed to impress the team after performing only 20 laps while testing at Silverstone. He was sent to Spa for the Belgium GP.

His fastest time in the 20 laps of testing also happened to be the best set by the Jordan team yet. During his first race, he managed to qualify seventh on the grid. Despite retiring on the first lap, he had made his mark in F1.

Exactly a year later, he won his first grand prix in the sport. The rest, as they say, is history… Michael Schumacher continued to rake up wins and popularity all over the world.
