The Red Devils seemed certain to sack the Portuguese, but a win against Newcastle earned him an apparent reprieve
Zlatan Ibrahimovic has backed Jose Mourinho to WIN the Premier League trophy as Manchester United boss.
Speculation about Mourinho’s position at Old Trafford threatened to reach a brutal crescendo last weekend against Newcastle United.
Reports on the eve of the Premier League clash emerged suggesting the former Real Madrid boss was to be sacked regardless of the result.
After finding themselves 2-0 down, United rallied to secure all three points thanks to Alexis Sanchez’s late header. However, the question about Mourinho’s future still lingered.
Public spats with players, boardroom battles and failing to sign top transfer targets have undoubtedly played a part in the club’s worse start to a season in almost thirty years.
But Ibrahimovic, who spent two seasons with United before joining LA Galaxy, has backed his former boss to deliver trophies.
“I think he has the ability to win [the Premier League]” said the Swede, speaking to BetHard. “I think he is the right coach for that club, for that team.
“But a coach is only as good as his team, so it’s not like he can do miracles if the team is not good enough.
“And I feel the team is good – it’s progressing, becoming better. This is his third year, the players know more and more the way he wants to play and how he wants it – so I believe, yes.”
The pair have maintained a close relationship since Zlatan worked under the Portuguese at Inter Milan for a season.
After scoring 25 goals to fire the Nerazzurri to the Serie A title, ‘Ibra’ revealed in his autobiography that Mourinho had given his wife specific instructions to keep the start striker happy.
He wrote: “Jose Mourinho is a big star. The first time he met my partner Helena, he whispered to her, ‘Helena, you have only one mission: feed Zlatan, let him sleep, keep him happy.’
