Afflalo (hamstring) uncertain for Knicks' opener

NEW YORK — Arron Afflalo‘s status for the New York Knicks‘ season opener is up in the air to due a left hamstring injury.

Afflalo, who was penciled in to start at shooting guard for New York, suffered a mild hamstring strain on Friday against the Boston Celtics.

Afflalo is being listed as day-to-day. He did not participate in Sunday’s practice after an MRI revealed the strain. While he hopes to be back as soon as possible, Afflalo suggested Sunday there is a possibility he will miss multiple games.

“I want to say I guess I just have to give it another two weeks or so, but it’s hard to judge,” Afflalo said Sunday. “I’m just going to go based on how I feel and with what the medical staff tells me.”

Afflalo sat for two weeks earlier in the preseason with a left hamstring injury. Friday’s injury seems to be an aggravation of that ailment.

If Afflalo is out for the Knicks’ season opener on Wednesday at Milwaukee, Knicks coach Derek Fisher can turn to Sasha Vujacic, Langston Galloway or Jerian Grant to start at shooting guard. Vujacic, 31, started in Afflalo’s absence in the preseason.

Fisher and Carmelo Anthony prefer to take a cautious approach with Afflalo’s injury.

“To be honest, if it’s lingering, then I’d rather him sit out. The season’s about to start and we’ve got a long journey,” Anthony said Sunday. “So there are other guys on this team, and we brought them here for a reason. And if he can’t play, then this is the time [for them] to step up.”
