Arsene Wenger bemoans early injuries as Arsenal crash out of League Cup at Sheffield Wednesday

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger bemoaned the loss of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Theo Walcott during their embarrassing League Cup exit at the hands of Sheffield Wednesday.

The Owls ran out 3-0 winners at Hillsborough, with goals from Ross Wallace, Lucas Joao and Sam Hutchinson completing a convincing victory after Oxlade-Chamberlain and Walcott had limped off inside the opening 15 minutes.

Wenger was left to react on a ‘very bad night’, but appeared to cite the loss of the England duo as a key factor in their demise in Yorkshire.

“It was very bad night for us because we lost two very important players in the first part of the game,” the Frenchman conceded.

“After that we were not at the level that is requested to play a team of the quality of Sheffield Wednesday tonight.

“In the end you have to congratulate them – they were sharper, quicker and more decisive than us.”
