Australian Formula Ford confirms national series for 2016

The Australian Formula Ford Association has announced that it will in fact have a national series in 2016, which will include two rounds as part of a revised Shannons Nationals schedule.

Despite being left in the cold as part of a review of national racing by the Confederation of Australian Motor Sport, the Formula Ford Association has managed to negotiate a the continuation of national series beyond the end of the season.

The six-round series will even include two Shannons Nationals rounds – Sandown and Queensland Raceway – as well as a final round at the prestigious Island Magic event at Phillip Island.

“In 2014 we saw 31 Formula Ford cars on the grid at the Island Magic event, one of the largest grid of cars seen on any track in 2014,” said series coordinator Phil Marrinon.

“The event has always been well run and our competitors have always loved the challenge of racing on arguably Australia’s greatest permanent tracks.

The other three meetings are yet to be confirmed, with the FFA working on locking down visits to Winton, Sydney Motorsport Park, and Wakefield Park.

Australian Formula Ford will also continue to be part of the ‘Road to Indy’ programme in the US, with 2015 champion Cameron Hill set to head Stateside to compete against other young guns for a fully-funded USF2000 drive.
