According to ESPN.com’s Dan Rafael, Lucas “The Machine” Matthysse (37-4, 34 KOs) will not be returning on the May 7 Canelo Alvarez vs. Amir Khan card.

The plan was for Matthysse to move up to Welterweight and square off against Mauricio Herrera (22-5, 7 KOs), but Golden Boy Promotions‘ Eric Gomez says that Matthysse’s eye, which was injured in his knockout loss to Viktor Postol last October, is still bothering him.

“He was training and getting ready for the fight but he felt some discomfort in his eye and he wants more rest,” said Gomez (via ESPN.com).

Matthysse has come up short in his championship bids against Danny Garcia and Postol, so a rushed-return in May is certainly not a good idea if he wants to become a major player at Welterweight.

“He is going to rest more but he is not retiring,” said Gomez.

“What Lucas is going to do is rest, take some more time for his eye to heal and see how it is. In a few months we’ll see how he’s doing and go from there.”

Meanwhile, Golden Boy Promotions will be looking for another fight for May 7 to fill the void left by Matthysse’s injury.
