Gennady Golovkin (34-0, 31 KOs) stopped David Lemieux (34-3, 31 KOs) in the eighth round on Saturday night in a one-sided middleweight world title unification fight at Madison Square Garden in New York.

Golovkin was dominant from the first bell, landing almost every punch he threw before the referee stopped the fight.

The Kazakh fighter hurt Lemieux in the opening round and continued to punish him throughout.

Lemieux seemed tentative and even when he started throwing shots, Golovkin had little trouble avoiding them.

In the fifth, Golovkin connected with a left hand to the body and Lemieux took a knee.

Golovkin hit Lemieux while he was on one knee from the knockdown. He was warned but clearly it was not an intentional foul.

Lemieux was bleeding from his nose and mouth in the in the middle rounds as Golovkin was picking off his Canadian opponent at will.

In the eighth round, Golovkin was pounding Lemieux  on the ropes and the referee waved off the fight at 1:32 of the round.

Golovkin said: “My goal is all the belts in the middleweight division. I told you this was a very important fight. I give my fans and friends a big show. Thank you my fans. Thank you my people.”

Golovkin has now claimed 21 straight knockouts and captured the IBF title from Lemieux to add to his WBA Super belt.

Also on the card, WBC flyweight champion Roman Gonzalez (44-0, 37 KOs) halted former two-division world champion Brian Viloria (36-5, 22 KOs) in the ninth round.

It was a competitive contest until Gonzalez dropped the American veteran in the third round with a right hand to the chin. The Nicaraguan was in charge for the remainder of the fight.

Viloria landed a  few shots here and there but he was taking a beating. Gonzalez hammered Viloria with accurate, sharp punches, bloodied his nose and swelling the right side his face badly enough that the referee had the ringside doctor give it a look after the eighth.

In the following round, Gonzalez, continued the assault and the referee stepped in and stopped the fight at 2:53 of the round as Viloria was being punished along the ropes.
