Wayne Rooney has come under fire from all aspects of the football world since the start of the season, with Louis van Gaal even suggesting he may rest his captain.
However, Rooney started Tuesday night’s Group B clash with CSKA Moscow and continued to struggle in front of goal for the majority of the match.
Boos rang out around Old Trafford when Van Gaal opted to take off Anthony Martial for Marouane Fellaini instead of Rooney, but it was the Englishman who had the last laugh with a fantastic header to snatch victory.
The goal was Rooney’s 237th in the Red of United as he drew level with Dennis Law’s record, with only Sir Bobby Charlton left in from of him in the club’s goalscoring charts.
