Kyrgios' agent Morris blasts Jankovic retirement

It’s not exactly getting better for men in the professional tennis community who choose to opine on the women’s game or individual players.

Jelena Jankovic retired on Friday from her second-round match against Magna Linette, down 1-0 at the Miami Open on Key Biscayne. Jankovic, currently ranked No. 26 on the WTA Tour, felt the effects of a shoulder problem that inhibited her serve motion. She didn’t win a point in the match’s first game, with Linette serving.

That didn’t stop ATP World Tour player Nick Kyrgios‘ agent, John Morris, from weighing in on Twitter with criticism of Jankovic for playing the match at all. “Disgusting,” he termed her retirement. WTA observers and fans were quick to go after Morris for his comments, often linking him to the mercurial behavior of his quite-vocal client, Kyrgios.

Jankovic was not the only player to retire from a match that day, as her colleague Belinda Bencic did the same, down 4-1 to Kristyna Pliskova. On the ATP side, Rajeev Ram withdrew before his match against Tomas Berdych. Each of those were also second-round encounters.

Krygios himself was criticized by compatriot Bernard Tomic recently for avoiding Team Australia’s latest Davis Cup tie. Kyrgios then entered the ATP event in Indian Wells, losing to a lesser ranked player and getting embroiled in an F-bomb-riddled argument with officials. It’s safe to say the cliche holds up: Wordy “birds of a feather flock together.”

Kyrgios opens his 2016 Miami campaign against Marcos Baghdatis.
