“It’s almost like nothing happened,” Nick Kyrgios says now of his strained relationship with ATP colleague Stan Wawrinka.
Tempers flared in August when Kyrgios audibly said mid-match that his fellow young Australian compatriot, Thanasi Kokkinakis, had slept with Wawrinka’s girlfriend, WTA player Donna Vekic.
“We all have a group chat, we’ve all been chatting, and I feel like we’re a lot more comfortable with each other now,” Kyrgios told FOX Sports of his Singapore Slammers teammates, Wawrinka among them, in the International Premier Tennis League.
“We’re out there competing, playing for the same team,” he continued. “We want to win. … I think that’s been the main thing, is me just getting up and giving him the same energy I give everyone else, and he’s appreciated that.”
For those well acquainted with nonverbal communication, the relationship between Wawrinka and Kyrgios is an intriguing one to view, and recently as the two have played for IPTL’s aforementioned Slammers.
It doesn’t take a university-level communications degree to see that maybe all is not as Kyrgios wants it to be.
Perhaps time heals all wounds, but it appears that this acquaintance has a long stretch of road ahead of it.
