Lewis Hamilton can be F1’s most successful driver EVER, David Coulthard tells talkSPORT

Thursday, November 19, 2015

David Coulthard says Lewis Hamilton can surpass Michael Schumacher to become Formula One’s most successful driver of all-time.

Hamilton is a three-time world champion after securing back-to-back titles in Austin last month with three races of the 2015 season to spare.

The Briton has divided opinion throughout his F1 career due to his off-track persona.

But, while Coulthard admits Hamilton may never be the most popular racer, he says the 30-year-old CAN be the sport’s most successful by beating Schumacher’s record tally of seven championships.

“Lewis is one of the class drivers of his generation,” the former McLaren driver, now an expert F1 pundit, told talkSPORT’s Ian Abrahams.

“Whether people take to him as an individual is another thing altogether. One thing is having skill and doing your job on the track and another thing is having that likeability.

“But the one thing he is is a global star. He is closer to Beckham than Scholes in that he would be known in America because of previous partners and things like that.

“Lewis is a good kid with a great talent and he is living out his dream. He is 30 years old, earning a a fortune, winning world championships and going through that development.

“Will he ever be considered the greatest ever British driver? Well that is down to opinion. But he can definitely win more titles than anyone else. He is young enough.”
