Vasyl Lomachenko (6-1, 4 KOs) defeated defending champion Rocky Martinez (29-3-3, 17 KOs) by a fifth round KO to win the WBO super featherweight title on Saturday night at Madison Square Garden’s Theater in New York.
Lomachenko dominated and out-classed Martinez from the start.
The Ukrainian southpaw rocked Martinez in the second with a hard left and continued to land several lefts and rights in the following rounds.
The finishing blows came in the fifth when a brutal left uppercut – right hook combination left the Puerto Rican motionless on the canvas for several moments.
“I came to do my job, I did my job very well tonight,” said Lomachenko.
“I dedicate my victory tonight to the greatest man who ever laced up the gloves – Muhammad Ali.”
Lomachenko, who previously won the WBO featherweight title, made history by becoming a two-weight world champion in just his seventh pro fight.
