Australian rider Cameron Meyer has asked to leave Dimension Data mid-season for undisclosed personal reasons.

The 28-year-old joined the squad this season as part of a two-year deal, but requested that his contract be terminated. His departure is immediate, the team announced Wednesday.

“Unfortunately, I made the tough decision to leave due to ongoing personal issues I have had of recent,” Meyer said in a team statement. “I have been unable to train or race at the required level that is needed for the WorldTour.”

It’s unusual for pros to leave contracts mid-season, but so far, Meyer isn’t disclosing why. He joined Dimension Data after racing four seasons with Orica – GreenEdge and three with the Slipstream franchise. After riding to second in the Australian road nationals and 12th in the Santos Tour Down Under in January, Meyer struggled in Europe this spring. His final race was the Tour de Romandie, where he was 117th.

“I cannot thank [team manager] Douglas Ryder enough for giving me this opportunity,” Meyer said. “I wish the entire team the best of luck, and look forward to watching their many successes to come.”

Meyer’s exit comes on the heels of the departure of Brian Smith, who left after playing the role as general manager to help the team transition to the WorldTour level.
