Nico Rosberg beats team-mate Lewis Hamilton to pole position in Russia GP

Nico Rosberg has beaten team-mate Lewis Hamilton to pole position for Sunday’s Russian Grand Prix.

The German takes his third pole of the year after posting a best lap time of one minute and 37.113 minutes in qualifying to comfortably finish ahead of reigning champion Hamilton.

Meanwhile Williams driver Valtteri Bottas beat Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettle to start from third, with the latter fourth on the grid.

Toro Rosso’s Carlo Sainz was absent from qualifying having smashed into the barriers at high-speed on Turn 13.

The Spaniard has fortunately escaped injury and is hopeful of returning to action on Sunday, despite having been airlifted to hospital.
