Sources: Stansbury leading candidate for WKU job

Former Mississippi State head coach Rick Stansbury is the frontrunner for the Western Kentucky job, sources told ESPN.

“If he wants it, it’s his,” one source told ESPN.

Another source told ESPN that Stansbury is leaning toward taking the job.

Stansbury is currently an assistant coach at Texas A&M, which lost to Oklahoma on Thursday night in the Sweet 16.

Stansbury, 56, was the head coach at Mississippi State for 14 seasons, from 1998 to 2012, and went to the NCAA tournament six times. He has been on Billy Kennedy’s staff for the past three seasons.

Stansbury would replace Ray Harper, who resigned last week after five seasons with the Hilltoppers.
