Rugby | Away wins pivotal for Brumbies

Cape Town – Brumbies lock Sam Carter believes the side’s three away fixtures could help them in claiming their first Super Rugby title since 2004.

The Canberra-based franchise will travel to Perth this week to take on the Western Force on Friday, and will square off with the in-form Stormers in Cape Town and the Cheetahs in Bloemfontein the following two weekends.

Stephen Larkham’s charges continued their early momentum when they beat the Waratahs on Friday after coming out on top when the faced the Hurricanes in the opening round.

“We’ve obviously got off to a good start but now we’ve got three games on the road,”  Carter told AAP.

“It’s important to get these wins away because if we come back and we’ve got a good result in Perth and then South Africa, then we’ll be shaping well for the season.

“So our goal is to win, to win away, and to win well.”

The Wallaby Test player said it was always hard playing in Perth and that these fixtures delivered mixed results in the past, but would rather travel early in the season while the players aren’t burdened with the fatigue that settles in towards the closing rounds of the competition.

“Going away now it is better, but obviously we still have to get the results and play well,” he added.

The Brumbies second row will continue their title chase without Blake Enever after he damaged his acromioclavicular joint against the Waratahs, sidelining the lock for at least four weeks.
