Golf | Campos holds onto Puerto Rico Open lead

Los Angeles – Rafael Campos, who gets energized playing in front of his hometown fans, fired a one-under 71 Friday to maintain the lead at the PGA Tour’s Puerto Rico Open.

The 27-year-old from San Juan has a one stroke lead after moving to nine-under on the tournament which is being played at the Coco Beach Golf and Country Club at Rio Grande.

American George McNeill is second after a one-under 71 while England’s Ian Poulter (66) and defending champion Alex Cejka of Germany are part of a group of seven at seven-under. Cejka shot a 71.

Campos leads for the second straight day after opening with an eight-under 64 on Thursday.

Campos said he can relax when he’s playing at home, knowing that his success will translate into more youngsters taking up the sport.

“It is great just having so much support,” he said. “I like being in this position. I really do.”

Poulter’s six-under bogey-free 66 was the best score on Friday. He started quickly with three birdies in his first three holes than finished strong by making birdie on the final three holes of the round.

“It moves me up the board quite nicely,” said Poulter of his strong finish.

Poulter and Cejka were tied at seven under with Americans Kyle Reifers, Steve Marino, Bronson Burgoon, Mark Hubbard and Will MacKenzie.

Australia’s Aaron Baddeley and Freddie Jacobson of Sweden were in a group tied for 10th at six under, three shots back of Campos.
