According to the Leicester Mercury website, following a protracted chase and plenty of media speculation in both hemispheres, the 34-year-old finally put pen to paper.

De Villiers has 109 Test caps and is among the most experienced players in the game.

He was part of the Boks’ Rugby World Cup-winning squad in 2007 and captain of the 2015 campaign, but announced his international retirement after breaking his jaw in the second match at this year’s tournament against Samoa.

Upon his retirement, De Villiers stated he would never play for a South African team again.
