Rugby | Kepu to return to Australia for 'family reasons'

Bordeaux – Australian international prop Sekope Kepu has been released from the final two years of his contract with Bordeaux-Begles for family reasons, the French Top 14 club said on Thursday.

The 30-year-old tighthead played 14 matches in the Top 14 and five in the European Champions Cup.

“UBB is disappointed by this decision but decided to respect the player’s family balance,” the club said in a statement.

“The two parties are separating on very good terms and UBB wish Sekope Kepu good luck for the rest of his career.”

Kepu, who used to play for the Waratahs, joined Bordeaux following the 2015 World Cup, where Australia reached the final, losing 34-17 to New Zealand.

He was also part of the Waratahs team that won the 2014 Super Rugby title, beating Crusaders 33-32 in a thrilling final.

Kepu was much feted when he arrived in Bordeaux alongside international team-mate Adam Ashley-Cooper.

The 63-times capped Wallaby is currently injured, suffering from a shoulder problem that will keep him out of Bordeaux’s final match of the season this weekend.

But he has been selected by Australia coach Michael Cheika in the squad to face tourists England in three Test matches later this month.
