Rugby | Naas Botha officially sequestrated

Cape Town – Legendary former Springbok flyhalf Naas Botha has officially been sequestrated in the Pretoria high court.

According to Netwerk24, the order was made by judge Francis Legodi in favour of Nedbank on Wednesday.

It was earlier this month reported that Botha’s estate was provisionally sequestrated by the high court in Pretoria after Nedbank claimed he owed it more than R1.1m on a mortgage bond for a property in Mooikloof.

Botha, 58, was given until June 15 to oppose the application and give reasons as to why he should not be sequestrated, but was unable to do so on Wednesday.

Botha’s problems are believed to stem from a six-year financial battle with Nedbank.

In an earlier report, Nedbank claimed that Botha was using five different identification numbers and that his income and assets were hidden in listed corporate entities.

It made it difficult for creditors to seize Botha’s assets to recover debts, the bank said in court papers.

He is believed to be director of 42 corporate entities.

Botha played 28 Tests at flyhalf for the Springboks between 1980 and 1992.

Botha played provincial rugby for Northern Transvaal, now called Blue Bulls, from 1977 to 1995.

During this period, his contributions ensured that they dominated South African domestic rugby for large parts and won the Currie Cup nine times (sharing it twice with Western Province in 1979 and 1989).

Botha also captained the Bulls a record 128 times and scored a record 2 511 points, including 1 699 points in the Currie Cup).

He was voted Rugby Player of the Year in 1979, 1981, 1985 and 1987 and has been a rugby pundit for pay-channel SuperSport for more than 20 years.
