Sport24.co.za | Sam Burgess cleared of serious neck injury

Sydney – Sam Burgess has been cleared of a serious neck injury following a heavy collision during South Sydney’s 8-6 loss to St. George-Illawarra in Australia’s National Rugby League competition on Sunday.

South Sydney released a statement on Monday saying the 27-year-old British frontrower would continue to be monitored for any muscular or neurological issues but was expected to be released from a Sydney hospital by Tuesday.

Souths coach Michael Maguire said “We’re all very happy to know that Sam hasn’t suffered any serious injuries from yesterday’s game.”

The game, played in wet, heavy conditions, was delayed for several minutes while Burgess lay motionless on the ground before being taken to a nearby hospital for scans and treatment.

Souths captain Greg Inglis said he’d spoken to Burges and reported “He’s up and around, upbeat, which is all good to hear.”
