Sport24.co.za | Stander: Boks have written us off

Cape Town – South Africa have already dismissed Ireland’s chances of beating them when the sides clash in their three-Test tour in June.

That was the word from Ireland’s South Africa-born back-row forward CJ Stander, who said the Springboks have “written off” his adopted country after their poor form during the early stages of the Six Nations.

“They are writing us off over there because of a few losses here and there, and because we weren’t chasing the Six Nations title,” he said.

“I have the family in South Africa, and they keep me up to date with what’s going on there.”

Stander, who represented South Africa at Under-20 level, joined Munster from the Bulls in 2012 after being told he wasn’t big enough to play in Boks’ back row, expects Ireland to face a stern test as they bid to beat the Springboks for the first time in South Africa.

“In your head going down to South Africa it’s going to be a big challenge, you’re going to have to be very physical, they are big boys,” he added.

“They are a great team, and everyone knows that. But if you’re written off and categorised as the underdogs, then that’s always something extra to fight for, to prove that wrong.

“So there’s both sides to the story.”
