Rugby | Strauss: No issues with rookie ref

Cape Town – Springbok captain Adriaan Strauss says he has no issues with Saturday’s Test against Ireland in Cape Town being handled by young referee Mathieu Raynal.

Just 34-years-old, this will be by far the biggest of Raynal’s seven Test matches.

He has never reffed a Springbok game before, but Strauss has backed the Frenchman to get it right at Newlands.

“We have had a quick conversation with him and I’m very comfortable with him,” Strauss said.

“I believe that any match official will referee what they see and we can only trust that.

“I believe he will have a good game. It’s also something new for him and something new for him to be in Cape Town so I think he’s looking forward to the game.

“He’s going to want to do his utmost best and we respect that. We trust that he will have a good game.”

The second Test between the Boks and Ireland (in Johannesburg on June 18) will be officiated by Australia’s Angus Gardner, while New Zealand’s Glen Jackson will take charge of the third and final clash in Port Elizabeth on June 25.
