Sri Lanka made two changes as they won the toss and elected to bat on a pitch with some live grass at the P Sara Oval. Lahiriu Thirimanne, who managed only 248 runs in 13 innings in the home season, was left out and 20-year old Kusal Mendis made his debut. Offspinner Dilruwan Perera came in for Tharindu Kaushal, who struggled for accuracy and rhythm in the first Test.

Mendis, who captained the Sri Lanka U-19 team in last year’s World Cup, had been dismissed for a duck in the tour game against the West Indians at the SSC. In Thirimanne’s absence, Rangana Herath took over vice-captaincy.

West Indies stuck to a five-bowler strategy while making a lone change: left-arm spinner Jomel Warrican made a debut, getting his Test cap from Garry Sobers, and took fast bowler Shannon Gabriel’s place. Warrican was impressive in the WICB Professional Cricket League, taking 49 wickets in the 2014-15 season, including two eight-fors.

Allrounder Marlon Samuels was reported for a suspect action again after the first Test but can continue to bowl until the results of the tests are out.
