Stockton to serve as assistant at Montana State

John Stockton is returning to college basketball.

The Hall of Fame point guard will serve as an assistant coach this season for the Montana State women’s basketball team, on which the former Utah Jazz great’s daughter is a member.

“Coach [Tricia] Binford called and took a flier asking if I’d be interested,” Stockton said in a news release. “I’m excited about the prospect of working with the kids. I’ve enjoyed watching the team over the past three years. I had a chance to be around them and develop relationships during their trip to the Bahamas this spring. It will be a fun group to work with.”

Stockton’s daughter, Lindsay, is a senior guard for the Bobcats. She started 27 games last season, averaging 8.7 points and a team-high 4.3 assists.

Stockton previously helped coach his daughter and Bobcats sophomore guard Hannah Caudill at Gonzaga Prep in Spokane, Washington, as well as two others in AAU competition.

Montana State is a member of Big Sky Conference. It went 15-15 last season.

“With the timing right before the start of the season, we were looking for someone that would offer us the smoothest transition, and John is someone who has been consistently around our program that we respect and trust,” Binford said. “He’s coached four of our current players; he’s always working in a gym; and given his commitment to family and business, we’re very appreciative that he’s agreed to become a part of our program.”

Stockton, 53, retired from the NBA after the 2002-03 season. He played 19 seasons with the Jazz, who took him with the 16th overall pick out of Gonzaga.
