Stoke star Ibrahim Afellay wanted by Roma

Roma have set their sights on a January deal for Stoke City attacker Ibrahim Afellay.

The playmaker was one of the most exciting talents emerging from Dutch football before he moved to Barcelona from PSV Eindhoven in 2011.

Despite four-and-a-half years at the Nou Camp, the 29-year-old started just eight league matches – after enduring a nightmare with injuries – and spent time on loan at Schalke and Olympiacos.

Stoke boss Mark Hughes took the plunge and snapped the playmaker up in the summer and he has already featured in 11 Premier League matches this season.

However, the rejuvenated talent has only started in four top-flight games and that may have alerted the Serie A side who could offer him first-team guarantees.

According to reports in Italy, Roma chief Walter Sabatini has been in contact with super-agent Mino Raiola – who represents Afellay – about recruiting a playmaker and the new Britannia favourite could fit the bill.
