Highly-rated French defender Djibril Sidibe
Sunderland are locked in a battle with Monaco for Lille full-back Djibril Sidibe, according to reports in France.
The Black Cats scouted the 23-year-old defender on numerous occasions last season with a view to making a swoop this summer and are now in the middle of a bidding war with Monaco.
According to L’Equipe, Monaco believe the lure of Champions League football next season will be enough to persuade Sidibe to join them, despite Sunderland’s attempts to offer a higher salary.
Sidibe was a standout performer for Lille last season, making 42 appearances in all competitions and scoring six goals.
He is under contract with Lille until 2019 but the Ligue 1 side are reluctantly willing to let him leave this summer, with a fee of around £8m expected to be enough to trigger a sale.
